Tuku rebuffs musical menopause at Birmingham gig.

By: Michael Chipato

Oliver Mutukudzi and the Black Spirits performance at Birmingham’s Carling Academy over the weekend switched fans and revelers into ecstatic mode during the band’s ongoing UK Summer Tour. The tour is set to be wrapped up with an open air epic performance at this year’s Zimfest 2008 in London on the 30th of August 2008.
Tuku continued to prove to his critics that he occupies the sharp diamond- headed pinnacle of Zimbabwean music, not giving in to the exigencies of his age …still fresh, yet mature, youthful…yet full of wisdom and undoubtedly getting better with age.Tuku’s performance showed that he has not reached the stage of musical menopause. ‘The composition of the band is fresh, vibrant, disciplined, brilliant, and breathes new life into Tuku musical symmetry. It makes Tuku even younger’, said veteran drummer guru Sam Mataure in an interview. The entire band members are agile thus methodically gyrated the night away.
The choreography is sweeter and Onai Mutizwa’s dance moves whist romancing the mbira can best be described as smooth (She has been nicknamed Smoothie, courtesy to a Birmingham Tuku fan) , Charles Chipanga’s artistry was mellow, and Never Mpofu’s mastery of the Bass guitar was spontaneous. Namatai Mubariki lulled the crowd with meticulous percussion control.Commmenting on the composition of the young band members who have been with him for the past year, Tuku said that, ‘Hapana mudiki apa…VESE VAHOMBE!’. Tuku has an established legendary musical history and brand internationally and to hear him say that shows that he is such a humbling and selfless artist keen on valuing all artists in the band.
Tuku music followers continue to swell outside the Zimbabwean borders and the multicultural composition of his audience is ample evidence of how well received his musical brand is. ‘I fell in love with Tuku music ten years ago and it is true love and not infatuation’, remarked one fan.
The house was set ablaze by the song, ‘Tozeza baba’, as Birmingham received a payback performance following the cancellation of a gig set in Birmingham earlier on during the year.
Tuku music is no Bubble gum type of music. It is eternal!
